FoI legislation - what it means
What your customers expect from you
The principle of Freedom of Information is clear. If any individual wants to see any piece of information that belongs to any public body, there is a presumption that they should be able to do so. Once a request for information (RFI) is received a response must be issued to the requestor - your 'customer' - within 20 working days. Being able to achieve this deadline and respond in a high quality way will raise your customers' trust of your service.
What you can expect
As a result of this legislation your organisation will be expected to log and receipt every request for information (RFI) received, validate whether it must be answered, assign it to an individual who can respond, retrieve the relevant information and issue the response. In addition any correspondence and financial charges associated with RFI's must be tracked, appeals and corrections handled and reports produced on the type and number of requests made.
Compliance will not be easy. However, non-compliance is not an option.
